Home Security
A home can be made more secure by simply making it more difficult for the potential burglar to gain access. While alarms and vigilance can help, there is no better deterrent than a house that has windows and doors fitted with lock systems that will prove difficult or impossible for a potential intruder to enter. There are particular points where intruders are aware of being the easiest point of entry.
One third of burglars get in through a window and simple ways of reducing the risk of this occuring include installing window locks that are easily visible from the outside as this means the window will have to be broken which may attract attention. Even when the window is broken, it still can't be opened without a key so there is a risk of the burglar cutting themselves. Types of lock used on windows include casement locks, fanlight locks, push locks, sash stops, espagnolette (multi-point) locks and deadlock shoot bolts.
It is quite obvious that doors must be secure as two thirds of burglars gain entry through them. When replacing a door it is worthwhile ensuring it meets British Standard PAS 24-1 'Doors of Enhanced Security'. It is recommended that you install five-lever mortise deadlocks (Kitemarked BS3621) to all front, back and French doors. Your locksmith can offer invaluable advice when it comes to choosing the correct lock(s) for your property.
